Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs)

The Stockholm Convention aims to eliminate, reduce and/or manage Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) to protect global human health and the environment. POPs are of particular concern because they remain in the environment for long periods of time, tend to build up (bioaccumulate) in fatty tissue of humans and wildlife, and may move from the point of emission to become widespread in the environment or become concentrated in particular regions. POPs are of particular concern in the polar regions of earth, where much wildlife depends on building up body-fat reserves, which may contain increasing levels of toxins.
